Stock Making Money

The Gini coefficient of income and wealth
is now reaching extremes in many countries. This measures the
inequality between the rich and the poor. In the US the Gini coefficient
is now at the same level as in the 1920s before the depression. In
countries like the US, the rich are getting richer whilst 45 million
people live below the poverty line, 43 million receive food stamps and
over 700,000 are homeless. With a real unemployment rate of 22% and
urban youth unemployment much higher, the US will soon experience social
unrest.

But it is not only the US that will
experience financial misery, famine and social unrest. This will also
hit most European countries and in particular the UK, southern Europe,
Eastern Europe and the Baltic States as well as African countries, the
Middle East, Asia, yes in fact the whole world.

Are boom and busts inevitable?

Well if you listened to the former
British Labour Prime Minster Gordon Brown, he proudly declared that he
had abolished booms and busts and thus economic cycles. But he was
expeditiously thrown out at the next bust which of course had nothing to
do with him since he blamed the US sub-prime market for his ill-fated
destiny.

Cycles or ebbs and flows are a natural
part of both economic life and nature. And right at the point when
something could be done to limit the damage, most nations seem to have
the uncanny knack of selecting the political individuals who will put
fuel on the fire and make the situation catastrophically worse.

Greenspan was one such individual.
During his 19 years as Chairman of the Fed, he could have limited the
economic and social damage that the US would suffer. Instead he took
every single measure possible to ensure that there would be a
catastrophe with uncontrollable consequences. But we shouldn’t just
blame the incompetence of Greenspan. It was sickening to watch every
sycophantic congressman and senator licking Greenspan’s boots and
praising his wisdom. Because Greenspan’s money printing and incompetent
interest rate management created one of the biggest financial bubbles in
world economic history. But the politicians loved this. It made the
stock market boom, and house prices surge. Thus the politicians were all
loved by their voters who did not understand the dire consequences that
were looming. And Bernanke de Pompadour is continuing the same
disastrous policies of creating money out of thin air. When will they
ever learn that creating money out of thin air and running astronomical
deficits that never will be repaid with normal money leads to the road
of total ruin? When will they ever learn? The very sad
answer is that they won’t and therefore they are leading the world into a
hyperinflationary depression that will have uncontrollable and
cataclysmic consequences for current and future generations.

Empty stomachs are rioting

We have for years warned about
hyperinflation leading to famine, misery and social unrest. Well, this
is exactly what is happening in many parts of the world. The protests
and overthrowing of regimes in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya are primarily
due to a major part of the peoples of these nations having no job, no
money and little food. It is their empty stomachs that are rioting. In
addition they are protesting against the leaders of these countries
stealing from the people.

It is virtually certain that these riots
will spread to many countries in the Middle East, Africa and the
developing world. This will lead to new regimes and new political orders
that could either be far left or far right politically or religious
extremists. But the new regimes will not be in a position to change the
root of the problem which is famine and poverty.  In Egypt for example
there has been a quiet military coup. It is unlikely that a democratic
regime will take over from the military. So the people will protest
again and again. And this will be the same in most countries. Eventually
the people will take the law into their own hands since no regime will
be able to give them the food that they need.

The hyperinflationary deluge is imminent

Although food and fuel inflation is
rampant worldwide already, we are only seeing the very beginning.
Massive oil price rises are likely to continue as a result of the
geopolitical situation as well as peak-oil. The Middle East is a time
bomb waiting to go off. Israel is in an extremely precarious position
and the involvement or non-involvement of the US in this conflict would
both have dire consequences for Israel and peace in the world. Food
prices will continue to rise dramatically. Major parts of the world are
living below the poverty line today and this will increase
exponentially.

The lethal concoction of rising food and
fuel prices is already affecting the Western world. The Continuous
Commodity Index – CCI, (60% food, 17% energy and 23% metals) has almost
doubled since the low in early 2009 and has gone up 42% in the last 12
months. The almost vertical rise of the CCI is one of the best
indicators of hyperinflation being imminent. A catastrophe of
astronomical proportions is looming. This will hit the world at a time
when there is no capacity whatsoever to take any real measures that
could alleviate the problems.

Most
countries are already running major deficits which will increase
dramatically in the next few years. The banking system is bankrupt and
is only holding together due to false valuations of toxic debt and
derivatives. This is done with the blessing of governments since
virtually no major bank could face an honest valuation of its assets.
Unemployment and especially youth unemployment is currently a problem
worldwide and it will get much worse. In 2010, the US government spent
60% more than its revenues. In order to balance the budget individual
and corporate income taxes would have to double.

Never before in history has the world run out of real money as well as (affordable) food and fuel simultaneously. But his is exactly what is happening now and it will get substantially worse in the next few months and years.

Financial misery, famine and high
unemployment combined with governments that will not be in a position to
give real help are a recipe for disaster that will lead to social
unrest and revolutions not only in developing countries but also in the
West. Hungry people are desperate people and desperate people do
desperate deeds. We could see already in 2011 food shortages, and riots
both in Europe and in the US.

Hyperinflation Watch

The following are INDISPUTALBLE FACTS:

  • The US dollar is down 82% against gold since 1999
  • The US dollar is down 49% against the Swiss Francs since 2001
  • The Dow Jones is down 81% against gold since 1999
  • The Continuous Commodity Index is up 100% since 2009

The above facts are clear evidence of an
economy that has been totally mismanaged. But more importantly most of
these trends are now starting to accelerate – a clear sign that
hyperinflation is just around the corner.

With
years of negative net worth and negative cash flow, the US is bankrupt
today. The Federal deficit is forecast to increase by at least another $
5 trillion in the next 5-7 years.  Add to this the State deficits, the
Municipal and City deficits that are rising at a galloping rate and we
have a country that is going to haemorrhage to death in the next few
years. One wonders when the totally ineffective and clueless rating
agencies are going to fathom this. Not that it will matter if they once
do.  One also wonders what Mme Bernanke de Pompadour and his court are
thinking. “She” and her courtiers should have above average intelligence
and could not possibly avoid seeing the facts that we all see today (of
course, some of us have seen it coming for over a decade). But “she”
has to please her master King Louis XV Obama and her devotion to the
king goes above all reasonable common sense, or rationale. So the two of
them will continue to crank up the printing press and drown their
people and the world in worthless paper.

Stock Market

To believe that the current money
printing liquidity boom is real and sustainable would be a very serious
and expensive mistake. The temporary and illusionary pickup that we are
now seeing in the economy and stock market is the normal initial phase
of a hyperinflationary economy. It must not be mistaken for a real
improvement in the economy.

The normal pattern at the beginning of a
hyperinflationary period is that stock markets surge. This is the
result of the increased liquidity and a flight to more inflation proof
assets. This was the case in for example the Weimar Republic and
Zimbabwe.  Just look at the chart below of the Zimbabwe stock exchange
that went from 1,420 in January 2005 to 5.4 trillion in June 2008, a 3
billion per cent increase.  That was of course in Zimbabwe dollars. In
US dollars the stock exchange went sideways with major volatility.  So
in hyperinflationary terms stock markets could continue to rise
initially thus making them a better investment than cash. However,
measured against real money, the Dow has gone down 82% against gold
since 1999 and 86% against silver since 2001 (see chart above). We are
currently seeing a dead cat bounce but we expect the Dow to decline a
further 90%, at least, against gold in the next few years. So even if
stock market investments will initially give the illusion of protecting
investors, it will be a very poor hedge against the ravages of
hyperinflation in real terms.

ZIMBABWE STOCK INDEX 2007-2008

Bond market

In January 2009, we warned investors
that long term interest rates were bottoming. Since then the 30 year
bond yield is up from 2.6% to 4.6% an 80% rise. But more importantly the
30 year is currently in the process of breaking a 17 year downtrend
line which dates back to 1994. This confirms that rates will now start a
major and rapid rise which is likely to reach the mid-teens or higher.
Governments will attempt to keep short rates low due to weak economies
but eventually the rising long rates will put strong upward pressure on
the short rates.  So the flight to government bonds that we have seen in
the last few years will soon reverse into a massive rush for the exit.
This will coincide with rapidly increasing financing requirements by the
US, UK, EU and many other governments. The poisonous concoction of
rising rates and rising financing needs will create a vicious circle of
collapsing bond markets and unsustainably high financing cost. This will
continue to drive interest rates even higher which will further
increase deficits and necessitate even faster running printing presses.
Add to that a collapsing currency and the hyperinflationary picture is
complete. It is our very strong view that investors should exit bond
markets entirely if they want to avoid a total destruction of their
assets.

Currency Market

As we have explained for many years, hyperinflation is created by the
government destroying the currency as a result of money printing to
finance deficits. This leads to the cost push inflation that we are now
experiencing. Add to that, shortages in commodities worldwide, thus
creating the perfect hyperinflationary scenario. The Dollar, the Pound,
the Euro and many other currencies will continue to decline. They can’t
all decline against each other at the same time so the market will take
turns in attacking one currency at a time. But all currencies will
continue to decline against gold. We believe that the dollar will soon
start a very rapid fall against gold and against many currencies.
Investors should exit the Dollar and also the Pound and the Euro. There
is no currency better than gold or silver but for any small amounts of
cash we prefer the Swiss Franc, the Norwegian Krone, the Singapore
dollar and the Canadian dollar.

Wealth Protection

A hyperinflationary depression will
destroy the value of money as well as most assets that were financed by
the credit bubble (property, stock market).  Wealth protection is now
critical and urgent. We see no better way of protecting assets against
total destruction than physical gold and silver stored outside the
banking system. Thereafter, precious metals, energy and food stocks are
our preference.  But it must be remembered that any asset including
stocks that is held through a bank is dependent on a sound and surviving
banking system.

The real move in precious metals is
still to come as we have outlined in many articles. Less than 1% of
investors own gold. Before this economic cycle is over we are likely to
see a mania in physical precious metals that will drive prices
exponentially higher. And luckily for investors, this is a mania which
is unlikely to end in a collapse since gold most probably will be part
of a future reserve currency.

Finally we are again quoting von Mises who clearly understood that “le déluge” is inevitable:

“There is no means of avoiding a
final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The
alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as a result of
a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion or later as a final
and total catastrophe of the currency system involved.”
– Ludwig von Mises

Prove Mayans Right: Address Structural Economic Problems With Chicanery (Part 2 of 2)

Monetizing Governmental Debt AKA Money Printing or in Bernanke’s Vernacular - Quantitative Easing

Here are some realities on Quantitive Easing:

  • If
Bernanke stopped QE, the United States of America would default, the
government would close down, there would be massive interruptions in all
Federally assisted programs (Medicare, Social Security, etc.), debt
service to China et al would be impacted or stop totally
  • We
take in about 2 trillion in tax revenue, we borrow about 1 trillion and,
like drunken sailors, we spend about 4.5 trillion. 80% of our deficit
is entitlements and debt service. Make all the cuts we want, that stuff
can't be cut. QE is a fancy term for counterfeiting the 1.5 trillion
dollar difference we have NO possible way of paying
  • QE is debt
monetization that IS increasing the size of the money supply. Since that
money has been spent, there is no way in hell Bernanke or anyone else
can “shrink” the money supply at the right time - the horses are out of
the barn, every POMO auction is just money created out of thin air to
    cover the Treasury's checking account

There are those who
would point out that without “velocity” we can’t have hyperinflation;
and with 23% employment we aren’t going to get people spending,
therefore there will be no velocity and thus no hyperinflation. I’d
advocate that this argument be looked at again. First, the government
is spending “funny money” that is, to some extent, creating some
“velocity.” What is more important - money is a
commodity as described in Part 1 - and therefore the more of a commodity
that there is the less its value. Since the inception of the Fed in
1913 the dollar went to a value of .04 cents, 80% of that devaluation
happened since Nixon took us off the gold standard. So if our dollar
goes to a value of less than .04 cents, lets say .00000001 cent - we
will have massive hyperinflation. Printing money is the road to
.00000001 cents.

I’m in the camp that gold hasn’t gone up, silver
hasn’t gone up and the stock market hasn’t gone up. Graham Summers of
Capital Research did a fantastic short piece titled “While I Love Gold” at ZeroHedge.

Stocks Priced to Gold

Like
I said, gold hasn’t “gone up” stocks haven’t “gone up” and food prices
haven’t “gone up.” The value of all currencies have gone down. People
who compare one currency to another won't see what is happening until it
is too late.

It is all how you look at it. We are playing an
entirely idiotic game because no president (other than Andrew Jackson)
had the guts to fix the real problem - money.

About the only
thing gold and silver will do is act as a true store of value and pay
off any fixed debt when things get totally out of hand - which, in my
never so humble opinion - is the obvious unstoppable trajectory we are
on now.

Lastly, on the subject of Ben Bernanke’s path to making the USA Zimbabwe I’d like to address the “We can raise interest rates
in 15 minutes” BS. Sure he can. But the rest of the “We can raise
interest rates in 15 minutes” sentence goes like this: of course 80% of
the deficit is unfunded liabilities and debt that is rolling over, so
doing so will bankrupt the country with impossible to pay interest on
debt. Estimates are that higher interest rates
will add TRILLIONS to our debt. Higher rates will be another nail in
real estates coffin, another nail in high unemployments coffin and
another nail in state and local debt burdens.

In summary: The
biggest lies about Quantitative Easing are: It isn’t [governmental] debt
monetization, we can raise interest rates, it isn’t causing inflation,
it won't cause hyperinflation, we aren’t increasing the size of the
money supply, we can contract the size of the money supply when the time
is perfect, we can stop it [QE] at anytime, it is creating jobs, and we
can sell stuff no one else is now buying and the money is just sitting
there, i.e. there is no velocity.

In short: It is QE or America
defaults. A.) Hyperinflate the absurd debt away or B.) Default. If
Bernanke thinks he can secretly devalue the dollar and reduce our debt
to some payable amount by reducing the dollar’s value by like 10% per
year (thus reducing our 128 trillion dollar debt to half over 5 years)
then he is really an utter and absolute moron.

The Maestro of
Disaster came right out and said that debasing a currency is American
robbery. Covertly stealing - even if it is for some lame unworkable
plan to save the economy - is not leadership, nor is it ethical.

Lies are the hallmark of a leadership deficit. Lies don’t fix problems, solutions do.

The Fix

The
fix is simple: Admit that things got out of hand over the past 4
decades and overtly do what they are covertly doing. Stop prolonging the
agony - it is abolishing the middle class. The only trick is to make
the monetary system as sound as possible. I have no false dreams that
we will ever wind up with a better system (read: something that isn’t
debt-money IS debt) but I do know we can do better.

We supposedly have 10,000 tones of gold.

On Monday night, I watched my 1st, The Very last Word host Lawrence O’Donnell.
Even while O’Donnell laudably attempted to emphasis the audience’s attention onand hopefully final, Charlie Sheen trainwreck interview, courtesy of the tragic undertow that threatens to pull Sheen underneath for wonderful, I was overtaken, not by the pulling on the thread, in addition to the voracious audience he serves. It didn’t make me unhappy, it produced me angry.

In terms of celebrities, we are able to be considered a heartless nation, basking in their misfortunes like nude sunbathers at Schadenfreude Beach. The impulse is understandable, to some degree. It may possibly be grating to listen to complaints from persons who get pleasure from privileges that the majority of us can not even think of. If you ever can not muster up some compassion for Charlie Sheen, who helps make a great deal more cash to get a day’s do the job than the majority of us will make in a very decade’s time, I guess I can not blame you.

Along with the rapid tempo of activities on the net and the specifics revolution sparked through the Web, it is rather simple for the know-how market place to assume it is special: perpetually breaking new ground and doing things that nobody has actually finished in advance of.

But you will find other types of internet business that have by now undergone a lot of the similar radical shifts, and have just as wonderful a stake while in the potential.

Take healthcare, for example.

We normally think of it like a large, lumbering beast, but in reality, medicine has undergone a sequence of revolutions while in the previous 200 years that are a minimum of equal to individuals we see in technology and info.

Much less understandable, but however inside the norms of human nature, is the impulse to rubberneck, to slow down and look at the carnage of Charlie spectacle of Sheen’s unraveling, but in the blithe interviewer Sheen’s existence as we pass it inside the best lane of our everyday lives. To get sincere, it can be difficult for men and women to discern the distinction in between a run-of-the-mill awareness whore, and an honest-to-goodness, circling the drain tragedy-to-be. On its very own merits, a quote like “I Am On the Drug. It’s Termed Charlie Sheen” is sheer genius, and we cannot all be anticipated to take the total measure of someone’s life every time we listen to something funny.

Rapid forward to 2011 and I am endeavoring to take a look at would mean of being a bit more business-like about my hobbies (largely audio). From the end of January I had manned up and started out to advertise my blogs. I had designed plenty of various blogs, which have been contributed to by pals and colleagues. I promoted these routines by Facebook and Twitter.

Second: the tiny abomination the Gang of Five on the Supream Court gave us a yr or so ago (Citizens Inebriated) literally contains a little bit bouncing betty of its very own that may quite nicely go off within the faces of Govs Wanker, Sacitch, Krysty, and J.O. Daniels. Considering that this ruling prolonged the idea of “personhood” to the two corporations and unions, to look at to deny them any appropriate to run inside of the legal framework that they had been organized underneath deprives these “persons” in the freedoms of speech, association and movement. Which means (once once again, quoting law school trained family) that either the courts have to uphold these rights for the unions (as particular person “persons” as guaranteed from the Federal (and most state) constitutions, or they have to declare that these attempts at stripping or limiting union rights really need to utilize to significant businesses, also.

Of all the interesting new tech that seems poised to garner a lot of buzz in 2011, near field communication (NFC), is probably the most exciting. If it takes off, it will transform the ways we communicate, share, and make payments with digital devices. This will likely take years to happen, but the groundwork is being laid right now. And RFinity is one of those companies at the forefront.

While Google and Apple are responsible for generating much of the buzz about NFC at the moment, the technology goes far beyond simply having the right type of chip in your mobile device. For example, how do you handle different types of data transfers being made from one device to another? And how to you ensure that they happen as quickly as possible? And most importantly, how do you ensure that they happen securely? Those are the things that RFinity is thinking about.

The company has just raised $4 million from Horizons Ventures in Hong Kong. And the space has gotten so red hot, in fact, that we hear they’re already out raising another round.

And it’s an easy bet for investors to make not only because of the space, but because of where the project originated: The U.S. Department of Energy. Specifically, RFinity was born when a bunch of infrastructure security experts working for the government were assigned to find all the vulnerabilities in cell phones. Through software they came up with, they were able to quite easily eavesdrop, manipulate SMS messages, and even compromise LAN security. Then they set out to figure out a way to stop people from doing those very things. That work led directly to RFinity.

Work originally began in the person-to-person and person-to-vendor sales space by way of mobile applications that route transactions through RFinity’s own secure servers. But now that NFC appears ready, RFinity is making sure they’re ready for it. The idea is that their technology could cut out the middle man here: themselves.

Obviously, the company isn’t going to share all the details on how they secure NFC transfers. But the basic overview is that they verify an incoming NFC signal and ask for a user’s permission before taking any action. Further, if the action is a transaction, it requires a PIN, just as you might do an ATM withdrawal. That’s all pretty standard. But the key is one-time-use transaction codes that RFinity creates on the fly along with complex cryptographic signatures. These ensure that an transaction is secure since it means that every transaction can only happen once. Even if those numbers were intercepted by a hacker, they would be useless beyond the one-time payment.

And even if your phone is lost or stolen, a thief couldn’t do anything without your PIN. And you can remotely shut down your NFC capabilities via RFinity. It’s enough to make me wish I could throw out all my credit cards right now. “Today’s identification and transaction systems are based on what? A magnetic strip on the back of a card, based on a 1950’s technology that relies on a base station to read the information embedded as a series of simple magnetic markers in plastic tape,” writes Josh Jones-Dilworth, who is working with the company to bring them to market.

Again, NFC as a technology is great and potentially game-changing. But the software is still needed to make it actually work. And some of the big guys began realizing that early on as companies like PayPal, Bank of America, and even Subway have been testing out different things with RFinity for some time. In fact, RFinity has actually been doing field tests of the software end of their technology since 2009 in places like Idaho, well before most people in the U.S. had ever thought about NFC.

But now people are starting to care. And soon, they could be caring a lot more. NFC is already built-in to Google’s new Nexus S device — and the company has put out a call for developers to start using the tech. Rumors have the next iteration of the iPhone gaining the technology as well. In other words, I suspect we may be seeing acquisition rumors starting to fly around RFinity in about six months or so. Provided their technology proves up to the NFC challenge, of course.

Money Making Websites

Confirming many recent reports, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) finally announced it wants to take a 30 percent cut of in-app content subscriptions. It boils down to this…

—Content owners can bring to their apps existing consumers who subscribe on their websites.

See more of our latest Payment Systems coverage
or add an alert for future coverage of Payment Systems.

—But, for new subs taken out in apps, iTunes Store payments must be used.

Right now, many publishers let readers take out new subscriptions inside their apps using their own billing mechanisms. Apple’s announcement does not explicitly state that this will be disallowed, but that’s the clear implication.

If publishers baulk at coughing to Apple 30 percent of app-generated subscription income, the net result could become a more fragmented landscape for consumers - either publishers could promote their own billing mechanism especially hard, meaning billing does not occur on the same device on which content is read, or publishers could quit iTunes Store and iOS devices altogether.

The move has been a tactic waiting to happen - Apple, ever the greedy gobbler of consumer spend, is making massive money from apps, but now new kinds of apps can be downloaded for free, with big business transacting inside as subscriptions.

Apple’s announcement below:

————————————————————————————

CUPERTINO, California—February 15, 2011—Apple® today announced a new subscription service available to all publishers of content-based apps on the App Store℠, including magazines, newspapers, video, music, etc. This is the same innovative digital subscription billing service that Apple recently launched with News Corp.’s “The Daily” app.

Subscriptions purchased from within the App Store will be sold using the same App Store billing system that has been used to buy billions of apps and In-App Purchases. Publishers set the price and length of subscription (weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly). Then with one-click, customers pick the length of subscription and are automatically charged based on their chosen length of commitment (weekly, monthly, etc.). Customers can review and manage all of their subscriptions from their personal account page, including canceling the automatic renewal of a subscription. Apple processes all payments, keeping the same 30 percent share that it does today for other In-App Purchases.

“Our philosophy is simple—when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app. We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, delighting both new and existing subscribers.”

Publishers who use Apple’s subscription service in their app can also leverage other methods for acquiring digital subscribers outside of the app. For example, publishers can sell digital subscriptions on their web sites, or can choose to provide free access to existing subscribers. Since Apple is not involved in these transactions, there is no revenue sharing or exchange of customer information with Apple. Publishers must provide their own authentication process inside the app for subscribers that have signed up outside of the app. However, Apple does require that if a publisher chooses to sell a digital subscription separately outside of the app, that same subscription offer must be made available, at the same price or less, to customers who wish to subscribe from within the app. In addition, publishers may no longer provide links in their apps (to a web site, for example) which allow the customer to purchase content or subscriptions outside of the app.

Protecting customer privacy is a key feature of all App Store transactions. Customers purchasing a subscription through the App Store will be given the option of providing the publisher with their name, email address and zip code when they subscribe. The use of such information will be governed by the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple’s. Publishers may seek additional information from App Store customers provided those customers are given a clear choice, and are informed that any additional information will be handled under the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple’s.

The new co-presidents of Walt Disney Co.'s digital media group used the platform of the company's investor conference in Anaheim on Thursday to say what Wall Street has been longing to hear: that the money-losing division will achieve profitability in 2013.

John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive Media Group, said the division made significant layoffs in January and plans an additional 25% cut in operational overhead "in our march to profitability." No details on timing were offered.

"In the last 90 days, we've focused on getting the right team and scaling the team to where the business is today," Pleasants said, adding that the earlier wave of job reductions had already "taken millions of overhead out of the Interactive media group."

Pleasants and Co-President Jimmy Pitaro talked about refocusing the business to take advantage of new opportunities online and on mobile devices  -- a theme Disney Chief Executive Robert A. Iger has underscored in earnings calls with investors.

The interactive group will begin shifting resources away from developing games for the mature console market, reducing spending by 50% over the next four years, Pleasants said. "That does not mean we won't be making boxed product," he hastened to add, noting the popularity of the Epic Mickey title released late last year.

Pleasants, who oversees games and social media within the division, talked about better capitalizing on opportunities -- not only on emerging technological platforms, but in burgeoning international markets. He said the division will narrow its focus to "four to six major franchises," creating content to take advantage of growth areas, while experimenting with business models -- from free to subscription to micro-transactions, in which players pay modest sums to enhance their online experience.

The group aspires to create its own world-class character franchises that can flow to other parts of the entertainment giant's businesses, much as Pixar Animation's "Toy Story" characters or Marvel Entertainment's superheroes fuel merchandise sales.

One such home-grown franchise Pleasants highlighted is Club Penguin, an online world for children that has grown by 400% in the last three years.

Pitaro, who has oversight of the Disney.com portal and a collection of websites for mothers and families, talked about creating a more personal experience that's shaped by a user's interests.

"When we deliver the right content to the right user at the right time," Pitaro said, "we'll grow reach and engagement and have a more powerful platform to surface the fantastic content we have across our company,"

1 internet marketing

The air is almost as thick with data as it once was with the smoke of the Industrial Revolution, with increasingly dense billows of bits traveling between the world's billions of mobile devices.

In 2010 alone, the amount of mobile data sent was 2.6 times what it was in 2009. And by 2015, people will send 26 times more mobile data than they do now, according to Cisco's annual Global Mobile Traffic Forecast.

That will mean 6.3 exabytes per month, said Suraj Shetty, Cisco's vice president of worldwide service provider marketing. "That's the equivalent of every man, woman and child on Earth sending 1,000 text messages every second," he said.

Yipes, better upgrade my plan!

Cisco says two-thirds of that data traffic will come from mobile video, as more people begin making video calls, sending each other clips they've recorded, and watching longer-form television and movies on their cellphones and tablets.

For a little perspective: Mobile traffic in 2010 was three times as large as all the world's combined Internet traffic in 2000. In short, mobile broadband is getting big -- everywhere.

"There are regions in the world where they have mobile Internet connectivity but are not on the electrical grid," said Doug Webster, Cisco's senior director of service provider marketing. "The Internet is breaking the electrical barrier."

The growth of mobile networks will come with an increase in wireless speeds too. The global average is about 200 kilobits per second now, but as more so-called 4G networks are erected around the world, the average will increase by a factor of 10, to about 2.2 megabits per second. That's on the low end of what home broadband brings today -- pretty astonishing, considering it includes mobile networks in all of the world's developing countries.

But not all of the data explosion is going to come from the rise in smart phones and tablets. In 2015, Cisco predicts, most of the mobile traffic will still come from laptops and netbooks (56%), while smart phones will account for about 27%, and tablets only about 3.5% of the traffic growth.

Cisco makes its predictions by pooling various sources, including data compiled by research firms, polling its own infrastructure of Internet servers, and sampling the data habits of more than 390,000 users who run Cisco's Global Internet Speed Test smart-phone application.

Egypt may have turned off the Internet one phone call at a time

Soon after, so did cellphones across Egypt, and then the Internet, as authorities cut communication in a last-ditch effort to halt the protests gripping the country.

The only trace the caller left was in cyberspace, where he had delivered a haunting message via Twitter: “Pray for #Egypt.”

Three days later in Washington, D.C., Nadine Wahab, an Egyptian émigré and media-relations professional, sat staring at her computer, hoping rumors of the caller’s disappearance weren’t true.

Suddenly his screen name flashed to life. She stared at the message.

“Admin 1 is missing,” it said. “This is Admin 2.”

Admin 1 was the caller, the anonymous administrator of a Facebook page that had played a crucial role in inspiring the uprising in Cairo. He had left Wahab with a contingency plan. If he disappeared, Wahab should wait until Feb. 8, two weeks from the date of the first protest, before she revealed his identity and sounded the alarm. At all costs, she was to maintain the appearance of normalcy on the page.

The contingency plan had made no mention of an Admin 2, and Wahab worried that the message might be a trap.

For the next week, Wahab and her small cadre of online associates became immersed in what seemed like a shadowy cyberthriller. At its center was a bespectacled techie named Wael Ghonim, a 30-year-old father of two, and Google’s head of marketing in the Middle East.

“My purpose,” wrote Wael Ghonim, “is to increase the bond between the people and the group through my unknown personality. This way we create an army of volunteers.”

Months of online correspondence between Ghonim and Wahab, parts of which were provided to Newsweek, as well as telephone and online conversations with the magazine, reveal a man who adopted a dead man’s identity to push for democracy, taking on a secret life that nearly consumed him.

Ghonim had received a master’s degree in marketing and finance from American University in Cairo and began working for Google in late 2008. In little more than a year, he was promoted to head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa, a position based in Dubai, where he and his family moved into a house in one of the city’s affluent suburbs.

Ghonim and Wahab met electronically last spring, after Ghonim volunteered to run the Facebook fan page of Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner who had emerged as a key opposition leader; Wahab offered to help with PR. Ghonim had a strong tech background, having already founded several successful Web ventures. But it was his marketing skills that would fuel his transformation into Egypt’s most important cyberactivist.

Under Ghonim, ElBaradei’s page, which promoted democratic reform, grew rapidly. He surveyed its fans for input, pushing ideas like crowdsourced video Q&As. “Voting is the right way to represent people in a democratic way,” he wrote Wahab in May. “We use it even inside Google internally. Even when our CEO is live, if someone posts a tough question and others vote, he must answer it.”

Making Money Cash

As a self-funded startup, Meyer and his team have just launched the service in San Francisco by walking around neighborhoods like the Haight, Cole Valley and Inner Sunset, handing out flyers and talking to people. He says the reaction has been very positive. "There's traditionally been a lot of informal sharing between immediate neighbors. This gives people a tool to organize that, and extend the circle of trust a bit further too." He also finds it remarkable how much has changed in the last decade of social technology, since his service relies on "communication between strangers," requiring coordination that would have been almost impossible until recently.

It's still early days, but with several hundred users after just a week, there does seem to be interest. It also seems a natural complement to a car-sharing service like ZipCar, making your choice of parking spot at your destination as flexible as your choice of vehicle.

Meyer pointed out that there are a lot of secondary benefits to the service too. It gives people a chance to help out other locals, to "be a neighborhood hero," reduces the gas wasted circling the block, and removes the hassle of having to move your vehicle every two hours because of street parking regulations. There's an active trade in garage and private space rentals here in San Francisco, but ParkCirca gives you the chance to park in multiple spots, rather than being anchored to a particular location.

There's no guarantees that their model will work, but as some who has recently moved to the city I really hope it does take off. Meyer is currently looking into raising angel funding to support his mission of "making urban life better for everyone," and I wish him luck.

Belgian Collection Society SABAM Caught Taking Cash For Made Up Bands It Didn't Represent

from the stay-classy dept

We've seen all sorts of ridiculous actions from various music collection societies over the past few years -- from PRS trying to charge a woman who played the radio for her horses to ASCAP claiming that a legally licensed ringtone also should require another license for being a "public performance." Apparently a satirical TV show in Belgium decided to see how far they could push the Belgian collection society, SABAM. While SABAM chose not to charge them for a ringtone "performance," it did send them invoices when they said they were going to have totally made up bands performing made up songs. Neither the bands nor the songs were actually covered by SABAM since they didn't actually exist. Yet, the invoices still came:

Making a telephone call to SABAM from a public toilet, a Basta team member looked at the manufacturer of a hand dryer and explained that Kimberly Clark would be performing at an upcoming event. That would cost 134 euros minimum said SABAM.

Next the playlist. What if Kimberly Clark sang songs not covered by SABAM? Titles such as 'Hot Breeze', 'Show Me Your Hands', 'I Wanna Blow You Dry', 'I'm Not a Singer I Am a Machine' and the ever-timeless, 'We Fooled You', for example.

Five days later the answer came from SABAM. All of the songs were "100% protected" and so Basta must pay 127.07 euros.

Concerned that this might be a one-off mistake, the Basta team tried again, this time taking brand names of products from the supermarket including Suzi Wan, the name of a Chinese food wok kit, Mister Cocktail and the Party Mix, which is a hybrid of a drink and some party food, and Ken Wood, the food mixer.

They got bills from SABAM for these 'artists' totalling more than 540 euros.

The group who did all this, Basta, then wondered who was getting all of this money, so it took the food they used in that second experiment and brought them to SABAM offices to sign up to collect their money. No such luck. Though, once exposed, SABAM found it in their hearts to return the money.

There are some other amusing parts to the show, including a fun bit that mocks SABAM's inability to understand zero. Apparently, the fees for parties are based on venue size, and the smallest size range is for places that range from 1 - 100 square meters. So, Basta set up a party in 0.99 square meters, and told SABAM about it. Rather than recogizing the put on, SABAM insisted that the "1" really meant "0" and handed them an invoice for 82 euros.

Nice to see collection societies around the globe living down to their reputations.
